Methylene Blue Health Benefits: Untangling Facts from Fiction

A comprehensive guide to Methylene Blue’s potential in health and wellness

Introduction: The Power of Methylene Blue

Methylene Blue has long been used for various medical and industrial purposes. Its versatility has led to an increased interest in its potential health benefits. In this blog post, we will explore the Methylene Blue health benefits, understand the potential risks, and discuss ways to incorporate it into your wellness routine. Lisa and I take two drops of Methylene Blue in our first bottle of fizzy water each day.

(Quick note: We use a SodaStream to make our fizzy waters. If you do so, DO NOT put the Bubly flavoring or Methylene Blue drops in the water until after you add the fizz. Otherwise, it spews out the top of the water bottle and you get a big mess.)

I. Methylene Blue Health Benefits

1. Cognitive Enhancement:

One of the most well-known Methylene Blue health benefits is its potential as a cognitive enhancer. Research has shown that Methylene Blue may improve memory and overall cognitive function, making it an attractive option for those looking to boost their mental performance.

2. Antioxidant Properties:

Methylene Blue has antioxidant properties that can help protect the body against damage caused by free radicals. By reducing oxidative stress, Methylene Blue may contribute to healthier aging and reduced risk of chronic diseases.

3. Mitochondrial Support:

Methylene Blue has been found to enhance mitochondrial function, which is essential for maintaining cellular energy levels. Improved mitochondrial function can lead to increased energy and better overall health.

II. Methylene Blue risks

1. Drug Interactions:

Methylene Blue can interact with certain medications, such as antidepressants, which can lead to serious side effects. It is important to consult a healthcare professional before incorporating Methylene Blue into your wellness routine if you are taking medication. Do not take Methylene Blue if you are using the anti-depressant Paxil, or the generic version Paroxetine.

2. Potential Side Effects:

While many people can tolerate Methylene Blue well, some may experience side effects such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. It is important to start with a low dose and monitor your body’s response to minimize the risk of adverse reactions.

3. Dosing Concerns:

Finding the right Methylene Blue dosage for health purposes can be challenging, as too much can lead to toxicity. It is crucial to follow recommended guidelines and work with a healthcare professional to determine the appropriate dose for your needs. Lisa and I started with one drop per day and when there were no side effects, we upped our dosage to two drops max. per day.

III. Incorporating Methylene Blue in Wellness Routine

1. Methylene Blue Supplementation:

Methylene Blue can be taken as a supplement in pill or liquid form. Be sure to choose a reputable brand and follow the recommended dosing instructions for the best results. ONLY use food grade or pharmaceutical grade Methylene Blue. Commercial-grade is not held to the same standards.

2. Methylene Blue in Nootropic Stacks:

Some individuals choose to combine Methylene Blue with other cognitive-enhancing supplements in a nootropic stack. This can help to boost the overall effectiveness of the individual components and support cognitive health.

(Quick Note: I use two nootropics I learned about on David Tomen’s Nootropics Expert. They were in one of the nootropic stacks he recommends. I won’t tell you what I’m taking because messing with your brain is not something you should do without some serious medical consultation. Get it wrong and you may not come back from the consequences.)

3. Topical Applications:

Methylene Blue can also be used topically for skin health, as it has been found to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. And remember, this is a food coloring. Mix too much in your skin cream and you’ll look like a Smurf! Consult with a healthcare professional to determine the appropriate usage for your specific needs.

Also, if you get it in liquid form, keep it refrigerated, and remember to shake your Methylene Blue before each use.

IV. How to Get Your Own Methylene Blue

When I first started using Methylene Blue, it was really hard to find. I would buy it through a small website that sells all kinds of off-the-wall stuff. But now, you can buy Methylene Blue from Amazon, of all places.

(Another important note: ONLY buy food grade or, better yet, pharmaceutical grade Methylene Blue. If it says “great for your fish tank,” move on.)

Conclusion: Methylene Blue in Wellness

Methylene Blue offers various health benefits, from cognitive enhancement to mitochondrial support. However, it is important to understand the potential risks and use it responsibly.

Consult with a Functional medicine practitioner before incorporating Methylene Blue into your wellness routine, and remember to follow recommended guidelines to enjoy its potential benefits safely.
