What is Functional Medicine?

The functional medicine model is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness.

It requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes. (Direct quote from the Institute for Functional Medicine.)

Find functional medicine practitioners:

It used to drive me crazy because every book I read on longevity told me I needed to find functional medicine practitioners.

But no one told me how.

I looked online and found no one.  I contacted clinics and they didn’t know what I was talking about.

Finally, I was rambling through one of Dr. Gundry’s books, The Energy Paradox, looking for his list of absolutely, must use supplements for longevity for another post I was working on, when there it was on page 283 in the appendix:

“If your provider can’t help or refuses to help, look for a restorative or functional medicine practitioner, many of whom can be found in your area by visiting www.ifm.org, the Institute for Functional Medicine.”  www.ifm.org.

I immediately went to the website and found nine functional medical practitioners ranging from an MD and a DO, a couple of Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP), and a few MS practitioners, within 10 miles of my address.

Additionally, each IFM certified practitioner has a posted biographical outline with location, insurance and contact information, specialties, education and IFM coursework.
